Supplemental Medicare Insurance is additional coverage that helps pays for things that original Medicare does not cover. Some types of supplemental Medicare pay for billed items such as deductibles, copayments or other medical costs that you would normally pay out-of-pocket.
It is important to note that supplemental Medicare insurance is a supplement to the coverage you currently have. Therefore, supplemental Medicare is not necessarily a substitute for healthcare.
What is Medigap or Medicare Gap Insurance?
This type of insurance is specifically for those currently enrolled in Medicare. When you are billed for a medical service, Medicare still covers the costs that it normally would and then Medigap Insurance covers any “gaps” in what you owe to the medical facility.
In order to be eligible for Medigap, you must currently be enrolled in Medicare A (hospital insurance) and Medicare B (medical insurance). It also requires an additional premium that you must pay. It is important to weigh those costs against potential medical bills to determine if Medigap would be beneficial to you. (If not, talk to your independent agent about a Medicare Advantage Plan.)
Additionally, it is important to understand that Medigap does not always cover prescription drugs. However, there are plans under the Medicare umbrella that do cover those costs.
